Project
Reedy River Phosphorus Study

Client
Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority
Greenville, South Carolina

Scope
With the renewal of the discharge permits for the Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority's (WCRSA) Lower Reedy and Mauldin Road Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) in 1995, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) extended the total phosphorus limit of 314 pounds per day, previously imposed upon the Mauldin Road Facility, to cover the entire Reedy River.  This means that the Lower Reedy and Mauldin Road WWTP combined may not release more than 314 pounds of phosphorus per day into the Reedy River.

The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits each of these facilities the option of performing a study to better determine the effects of WWTP phosphorus on Boyd Millpond and Lake Greenwood prior to the implementation of costly treatment process upgrades.  Under this provision, WCRSA elected to perform a study and establish the maximum phosphorus limits for the Mauldin Road WWTP and the Lower Reedy WWTP that would not significantly impact the desired use and water quality of Boyd Millpond and Lake Greenwood.
