Project
Addition
to the
Callie and John Rainey
Hospice House
Client
Hospice of
the Upstate
Anderson, South Carolina
Scope
In 1998,
Hospice of the Upstate opened the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House
in Anderson, South Carolina, and became the state's first hospice house,
a residential home dedicated to providing end-of-life care and emotional
support for terminally ill patients and their families.
In 2000,
only two years after opening its doors, Hospice of the Upstate began
their relationship with Design South Professionals, Inc. in an endeavor
to expand their existing facility, reflecting their successful record as
end-of-life caregivers to those individuals unable to live peaceably in
their own homes.
The new,
approximately 9,700 square feet, one story addition ties into the
existing Hospice facility strategically to provide immediate and easy
access to the existing central lobby, nurses station, and administrative
facility. Reflecting the peaceful, countryside farm theme intended
by the existing facility, the new addition's exterior incorporates
a similar vinyl-sided home style providing for a seamless transition
between old and new. The new wing addition includes sixteen private
patient rooms, each with a complete bathroom, multiple closets, and
kitchen unit, as well as a new family room, lounge, snack area, staff
break/locker room, staff toilet/shower room, separate clean and soiled
linen rooms, mechanical/electrical room, and multiple storage and
support areas.
Construction
of new site improvements include a new 51 space parking lot, sidewalks,
a new access road, and storm water management system.
Construction
on the new facility began in May 2001. During the Summer of 2002,
Hospice opened their new facility to the Upstate expanding their care
and service to a total of 32 patient beds.
